Daily sports briefs | New World Champions Cup tournament proposed, English football to introduce quotas, US Open on ... but behind closed doors - and more!
NEW RUGBY WORLD CHAMPIONS CUP PROPOSED
The Daily Mail reports that rugby bosses are preparing to introduce a World Champions Cup tournament every 4 years from 2022 that would feature the top 16 clubs in the world. No details regarding how the top 16 clubs would be determined have been revealed yet, but the tournament would have to take place outside of Lions tour and World Cup years.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Bring it on! With such a confused global calendar currently we are not surprised that this has not happened yet, but once we get some uniformity, it would be great to see a global club championship. We would prefer to see it hosted every 2 years though as a club's form over 4 years can be very hit or miss and fluctuates more than a national team's does.
ENGLISH FOOTY TO INTRODUCE QUOTAS?
Amid the BLM movement sweeping the globe, there have been renewed calls for the introduction of BAME (Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic) coaching quotas in the English Premier League. Under the proposed rule, clubs would need to have at least one BAME member of their coaching staff.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: The EFL already has the Rooney Rule - not named after Wayne but Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney - whereby teams have to interview at least one BAME candidate when searching for a new, first-team manager. Quotas can cause complications but at the very least there is currently a glaring lack of diversity in the EPL among coaching staff.
US OPEN OFFICIALLY ON BUT BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
It has been officially announced that the US Open will take place behind closed doors in New York from 31 August - 13 September. The French Open will follow two weeks later in Paris.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: A couple of discussion points come into play here. 1. How many of the elite players will play under the strict Covid-19 retractions? 2. How will players managed to adjust from US Open hard courts to French Open clay in under 2 weeks? 3. The New York crowd at the US Open is one of the loudest and most atmospheric in the world ... will be eerie without it.
